In a surprising twist, a canteen in Mudigere taluk, Karnataka, has seen a surge in business due to its unique name. Called Canteen Nameless, this small eatery on the Beluru Sakaleshpura road has become a popular spot for locals and travellers alike. Owned by Ashok Shetty, the canteen’s name has attracted many curious customers, boosting its popularity.
The canteen serves a variety of snacks that have quickly become famous. Customers flock to enjoy the juice, coffee, tea, buns, and golibajje offered at Canteen Nameless. The simple yet tasty menu has made it a favourite among the residents of Mudigere, a town panchayat and Taluk in Chikmagalur district, 30 km from the district headquarters. The nearest airport is in Mangaluru, 128 km away. Mudigere is well-known for its coffee and black pepper production.
Ashok Shetty, originally from Mudigere, had ventured to other states in search of work. He worked in several hotels, such as Hotel Annapurneswari, Hotel Ashok, Hotel Malenadu and Malnad Special. Despite his efforts, success eluded him. Upon returning to his hometown and naming his eatery Canteen Nameless, his fortunes changed dramatically.
The name stands out amid the trend of stylish and trendy hotel names, setting a new trend for tourists in the highlands. The novelty of the name Canteen Nameless has intrigued many, drawing them to try out the canteen’s offerings.
Earlier in 2023, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the opening of 188 additional Indira Canteens to provide subsidised food to the poor in cities and towns. On November 30, after garlanding the statue of saint Kanakadasa at the Legislators’ Home in Bengaluru, he stated that Indira Canteens would be established in 225 wards of Bengaluru. He also mentioned plans for mobile canteens in areas lacking space for permanent Indira Canteens.
Despite the government’s initiatives, it is local places like Canteen Nameless that add a unique charm to small towns like Mudigere.
