A massive hilsa fish arrived at the Kakdwip market, catching everyone’s attention with its impressive weight of about two and a half kg. This prized fish has fetched over Rs 6,000 in the market. In 2022 and 2023, hilsa fish weighing up to three kg were seen in the local market, but this size is quite rare. The fish was caught by fishermen using small boats in the local river, rather than the usual trawlers. Many fishermen in the Sundarbans area in West Bengal use these small boats to fish, casting their nets into the river. Four fishermen from Kakdwip went to the Muriganga River in a small dinghy boat and managed to catch this hilsa in their net. They quickly brought the fish to a farm in Palbazar, Kakdwip.
Last year, a fish over 3 kg was also caught, but this is the first time they’ve seen such a large fish. The fishermen are quite pleased with their catch.
Besides, the Digha Estuary Fish Auction was held on June 13. It was a historic auction as it witnessed the selling of a 200 kg fish. The giant Kai-Bhola fish was sold for Rs 51,000. A company in Kolkata bought the fish. Usually, these giant-sized bony fishes are found in the deep sea. This huge fish comes up in two trawlers. On the auction day, it came in the trawler of a fisherman from Odisha. The auction was held at the Digha Estuary Fish Auction Centre. It is the largest marine fish auction centre in East India, where large-sized fish are put up for sale at various times.
During the monsoon fishing season, these types of fish come up in fishermen’s trawlers. This year, this large-sized kai bhola fish was the first to appear in the Digha Estuary. Several fishermen said that although the fish is huge, it is not expensive. Despite not fetching enough, the fish garnered the attention of the local traders and fishermen who came to the auction centre.
