In A Mix-Up of Identities, Odisha Hospital Declared Alive Man dead; Grieving Wife Kills Self
Knowing that Dilip was dead, his tormented wife died by suicide on New Year's Day, January 1.

In a shocking incident, a grief-stricken wife died by suicide a day after her husband was thought to have succumbed to burn injuries in an AC compressor blast at a private medical college in Odisha’s Bhubaneswar. However, the man, who was one among four AC technicians injured in the blast that occurred at their workplace, is alive and was wrongly identified as the one who died at the Hi-Tech Hospital.

The 34-year-old victim, Dilip Samantaray, is currently receiving treatment for his burn injuries. While Samantaray was moved to the ICU along with one of his injured co-workers, the other two persons succumbed to their injuries.

Issuing a clarification following the hospital’s blunder, Hi-Tech Hospital CEO Smita Padhi said after the blast, a staffer of the agency identified the injured persons and on the basis of the details given by him the hospital maintained the records. “A person identified as Dilip Samantray (according to the records) died during the treatment on December 30 and as per protocol, we informed the police. His family members received the body after due procedures,” Padhi was quoted as saying by Indian Express.

Confusion Envelopes Dilip’s Death, Wife Died By Suicide

Knowing that Dilip was dead, his tormented wife hanged herself on New Year’s Day, January 1. However, the hospital later clarified that Dilip was alive and the deceased was his fatally injured colleague Jyotiranjan Mallick.

The body of the technician who died in the blast was mistakenly identified as that of Dilip Samantray, following which it was handed over to his family.

Assuming that the body handed over to them was of Dilip, the family cremated it.

Dilip, Jyotiranjan, Simanchaland and Sritamhad been servicing ACs at the hospital on December 29 when the explosion occurred. While Jyotiranjan was dead on December 30 ( wrongly identified as Dilip), Sritam succumbed to his injuries on January 3.

The mix-up of bodies that led to the suicide of Dilip’s wife triggered protests outside the hospital.
