New Delhi: Leading technology magazine PC World has named IBNLive.com as the best news website in India among several top contenders, which included NDTV.com, Sify, Rediff, Expressindia, HindustanTimes and Times of India, MSN and Yahoo among others.
"IBNLive won the top spot amongst all news websites because of its clean design and good technology usage," the magazine says in its cover story on the latest issue.
On the criteria of selection in different segments, PC World says they "should use technology to deliver solutions; information should be presented intuitively and concisely and design should aid the overall experience. And that is what our Best Indian Websites represent."
The magazine also says that "being one of the pioneers of videos on a website, IBNlive enjoys a large fan following. Even so, it could do with better implementation of its user comment handling," says its assessment.
In its first year, the PC World Awards focus on 20 prominent categories – products and services that are most useful today and are not based on fancy future roadmaps. The 126 nominees that the tech magazine evaluated "represent the best-known names as well as some not-so-famous-yet sites that our panel of experts believe do justice to their mission."
"The awards aim to capture the framework and user understanding that the site has embodied in its design and deployment of technology rather than to rate its specific content, something that changes very dynamically and perhaps impossible to judge objectively," the magazine declares. "The winners are based on what our experts believe are the most promising and deserving sites," it adds.
Reacting to the announcement, CNN-IBN Editor in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesai termed it "just another feather to the cap."
"IBNlive.com is for us a window to the future. We believe that IBnlive.com is setting a benchmark for Indian news websites. The passion and innovation that IBnlive.com has shown makes us all very proud. This is only the beginning, the best is yet to come," he says.
IBNLive Editor Roshan Tamang agrees it is "just the beginning".
"At IBNLive, we look at news as a very exciting beat. We do not compromise on usability, innovation, design and technology. That's how we want to make the news space more happening."
He adds a parting shot: "Watch out for IBNLive Version 2.0 which is being launched soon. It will just prove how serious we are."
IBNlive's sister portal Moneycontrol.com too wins hands down in the stock broking category. "Moneycontrol.com emerged as an outright winner, providing an absolutely clean and easy to use interface, with all the features that you might desire at your fingertips. The site also deals in commodity trading unlike many other sites. A live market map, watch list, current news and market advice are some of the other features on offer here," " PC World declares.
Others in contention in this space included way2wealth.com, jvfinancials.com, HDFC Securities, Money Control, ICICI Direct, IDBI Paisa Builder, 5 Paisa and India Bulls.
Yet another Web18 group site Tech2.com emerged as the clear winner among the technology websites. "A clean and easy-to-use design with a smart color palette to attract the target audience, the fresh feel of the site and the addition of video in collaboration with CNBC-TV18 add a new dimension to the website and move it to a different paradigm altogether," says the panel.
Cricinfo was adjudged the winner in cricket category, where Web18 Group's CricketNext finds a mention as the next best specialist.
Among other categories, Yahoo! Games won the honours in the Gaming category, Fernsnpetals was named the top website in Flowers and Gifts categories; Futurebazaar won in shopping segment and Gmail emerged the outright winner in e-mail service.
Yahoo was the overall winner among portals while Monsterindia was named the best among job sites and India Property won in the Real Estate space. Orkut won hands down in social networking category, Cleartrip bagged the honours in travel, Bharatmatrimony in matrimony, Visabillpay in bill payment, Rediff in entertainment, itasveer in photo printing, Yahoo Mobile in mobile content and eBay in auction.
