When we walk into her vanity van, parked under the baking hot sun in one of the quiet corners of Mehboob Studio in suburban Mumbai, Minissha is the picture of calm composure. Totally regardless of the hustle and bustle of her entourage around her, some busy applying make-up to her face, some adjusting rollers in her mahagony brown hair, and some simply filling her in with the latest gossip of the day, she looks like someone who can easily cut herself loose from the surrounding cacophony.
Her ability to create that intimate, personal space for herself extends to her position in the film industry as well. She has been paired opposite Bollywood star kid Ranbir Kapoor in Bachna Ae Haseeno, has acted opposite heartthrob Imran Khan in Kidnap and in her upcoming movie Bheja Fry 2, is the lead actress opposite three industry heavyweights - Vinay Pathak, Kay Kay Menon and Amole Gupte. Yet, the actress admits that she has never been a bit overwhelmed by all the star quotient around her. "In fact,” the actress clarifies, "it has felt fabulous! If you see some of my films, like Well Done Abba, Shaurya..., I have been cast opposite actors who can be quite intimidating. But I have always held my own." Pausing for a moment of contemplation, she adds, "The more I work with these actors, the better it is for me to learn from them."
Often being regarded as the 'pretty young thing' in Bollywood, Minissha has no qualms about being labelled into a certain category or being cast in specific roles. In fact, she takes pride, as she puts it, in her 'porcelain complexion and her beautiful, thick hair." She points out, "It's not a disadvantage for sure. I accept all the compliments that come my way. Actually, I am quite used to being called cute."
With the sweet-girl-next-door look, naturally comes the squeaky-clean image that Minissha has been known to keep. But this clear image took a beating recently when she landed in Mumbai on her way back from the Cannes Film Festival. After her baggage got lost along the way, she was detained at the international airport for 16 hours and was questioned about a certain amount of undeclared diamonds on her.
Now safely back home, how has the past few days' ordeal been for her? Minissha flashes a wry smile and says, "It's not been over yet. It was such a huge fiasco. It was a minor issue. I would have to say things were blown out of proportion."
So is it hard to keep up with that saccharine sweet image always or is it just part of being an actress in Bollywood? The petite actress actually breaks into an impish grin as she retorts, "Good girls are bad girls that never get caught!" You can't help but smile at that...
