Hyderabad: Unable to meet the ever increasing demand for water tankers, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has at last decided to stop booking water tankers for commercial establishments such as restaurants, hotels, shopping complexes and others. Its first priority is meeting drinking water needs of domestic consumers but consumers who have booked water tankers via the water board’s Dial-a-Tanker have been made to wait for more than a week.

Speaking to City Express, HMWS&SB officials admitted that there was a backlog of about 11,400 pleas for water tankers! It will take at least three weeks to send water tankers to all of them. On daily basis, the water tankers make about 450-500 trips, both free and paid, to different parts of the twin cities. On an average per day, about 700-800 consumers book for water tankers.

The demand for water is increasing with each passing day as the city is witnessing severe water shortage so much so that even private water tankers’ owners are finding it difficult to cope up with it. The demand is so high that consumers are willing to shell out double the amount for a water tanker from Rs 425-800.

The demand for water is more in areas like Ameerpet, Begumpet, Sanjeeva Reddy Nagar, Nampally, Goshamahal, Koti, Gowliguda, Somajiguda KBHP Colony, Seri Lingampally, Madhapur, Kondapur, Sainikpuri, Secunderabad, East and West Marredpally, RTC X Roads, Musheerabad and others areas. The reason for this is the alarmingly low level of underground water in these areas.
