HYDERABAD: Holi revelry claimed the lives of two youngsters who drowned while they were washing colours in waterbodies on outskirts of the city in separate incidents. In the first incident, a 21-year worker in a charcoal unit drowned in Suryanarayana Cheruvu in Keesara mandal on Thursday afternoon. The deceased, P Ravi was a native of Amalapuram and residing at Godumkunta in Keesara. Ravi along with his friends, Yadagiri and Ramesh played with colours and around 12 noon, the trio went to the pond to wash themselves. "One of them entered the waters while the others sat on the banks. Ravi followed his friend who entered the pond and after reaching some distance started to drown. The third friend sitting on the banks alerted his friend who tried to rescue Ravi but in vain,'' Keesara police sub-inspector B Bhaskar said. Expert swimmers were pressed into service and after more than three-and-half hours, Ravi's body was retrieved from the lake. The body was shifted to Gandhi hospital for a postmortem.In another incident, a 25-year-old person drowned in Kattamaisamma lake at Suraram on Thursday afternoon. Two friends from Suraram, Khalifa (25) and Raghu played with colours in their locality and later went to the lake. "The lake is uneven and there are several pits underneath the water. Khalifa, who is not a good swimmer, entered deep into the waters and fell into one of the pit. Raghu saw his friend drowning and rushed for help. Alerted by Raghu, locals rushed to the spot and brought Khalifa out,'' Dundigal police inspector V Bhaskar said. Khalifa was shifted to a nearby private hospital but he died while undergoing treatment. Dundigal police registered a case and are investigating.
