BANGALORE: The Director of Corporate Planning and Marketing at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Squadron Leader Baldev Singh committed suicide by hanging himself with turban in Brahmagiri Hill (Nandi Hills) on Tuesday. With over 6,000 hours of flying in over 55 different types of aircraft, 58-year-old Singh was an avid aviator and was recently promoted to his current post which according to sources, ‘he was not happy about’.From being the Chief Test Pilot, he was promoted to a ‘highly pressuring’ corporate job.Sources said that he was not enjoying his work away from flying as he was moved to the corporate office at Minsk Square only in August. It may be recalled that Director of Human Resources Sanjiv Sahi left his post and joined the GMR group without the Ministry of Defence (MOD) clearance.Even Director (Finance) D Shivamurthy, who was due to retire in 2016 was asked to leave by the MOD stating “his services were no longer required”, as the MOD was said to have not approved his request for an extension. The latter’s removal had created a stir in HAL as his office was locked down within minutes of his removal and was made to go home in an autorickshaw. However, sources said it is too early to assume that this sort of treatment to former directors could have influenced Singh’s decision to take this extreme step. The police are yet to ascertain the reason behind Singh’s suicide. Reportedly, he had gone to Nandi Hills in his official car and was scheduled to attend a conference in Delhi on Tuesday.Singh had joined the HAL in 1989. He is survived by wife Vibhu and two sons.
