Unable to come to terms with the deaths of two of their blood relatives, a man and his daughter committed suicide on a rail track at Putlur, about 45 km north of the city on Wednesday.
The dead were identified as Tirupathi (45) and Gunasundari (19) of Thaneerkulam village near Tiruvallur, who had survived a suicide attempt hardly a fortnight ago, police sources said.
According to a Government Railway Police (GRP) official, tragedy struck Tirupathi’s family twice, claiming the lives of his son and wife, early this year. “Their son Gunasekar drowned in a river, where he had gone for taking bath, mid-March. Sorrow began haunting the family with the unexpected demise of their son,” the official added.
Unable to bear the grief, the trio, including Tirupathi’s wife, had attempted suicide by consuming rat poison on August 15. “While the father and daughter were rushed to a government hospital here, the mother was treated at the Tiruvallur GGH. Fortunately, the father and daughter survived, but the woman died,” the official added.
However, the duo recovered only to lay their heads on the track to commit suicide near Putlur railway station around 6.00 am on Wednesday. Their heads were decapitated. The bodies were taken to the Tiruvallur GH for autopsy. “Tirupathi was employed in a company at Tiruvallur, while Gunasundari was a second year student at a private engineering college. We have informed their close relatives at Karur,” the GRP official said.
