Two days after ex-serviceman subedar Ram Kishan Grewal committed suicide over delay in the implementation of One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Thursday said "Grewal can't be a martyr".
Speaking to media persons outside Indradhanush Auditorium on the occasion of Swarna Jayanti celebrations, Khattar said, "No soldier would ever commit suicide. Shaheed' are those who lay down their lives at the border, not who commit suicide".
"No one should politicise Grewal’s suicide as the ex-serviceman committed suicide because of discrepancies in his bank account and not due to delay in the implementation of 6th and 7th pay commission directives for pensioners under the OROP scheme," he told reporters.
Khattar's statement invited sharp criticism from across the political spectrum.
On Wednesday the political drama touched a new low in the national capital with top leaders indulging in blamegame with the Centre over the OROP issue and getting detained by the Delhi police after they tried to meet the family of the ex-serviceman who ended his life on the lawns of a government building at Janpath in Delhi.
Grewal's eldest son Dilawar lit the pyre at around noon in the presence of a large number of people who had gathered from nearby areas in Bamla, 20 kilometers away from Bhiwani.
