THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Affirming the commitment of the State Govt to protect the interests of the farmers by ensuring fair prices for their produces, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said that state-of-the-art warehouses will be set up to solve the problems in the warehousing sector in the state. The state would put in joint effort with the Central Govt to see that the farmers were not exploited, Chandy said while delivering the key-note address at a seminar on ‘Commodity Futures Market with Special Emphasis on Natural Rubber’ here on Wednesday. The seminar was organised by National Mutli-commodity Exchange of India Ltd and Forward Markets Commission.Referring to the lack of quality warehousing in Kerala, he said that the State Govt would help identify space to set up state-of-the-art warehouses. On future trading, Chandy said that the effort should be to maximise benefits after discussions with stakeholder representatives. Kerala has a high-ranking position both in rubber production and productivity and the contribution of rubber to Kerala’s agrarian society is very high. Welcoming the introduction of electronic price ticker boards in Kerala, Chandy assured state’s full support in identifying suitable spots to position these boards. MoS for Consumer Affairs K V Thomas said that the Centre had allotted Rs 10.5 crore to Kerala for starting 100 consumer clubs and for setting up effective help-lines in the state.
