New Delhi: Fernando Gonzalez's dream run at the Australian Open this year continued on Wednesday as the Chilean upset second seed Rafael Nadal in straight sets to make it to the semi-final.
The 26-year-old hit a whopping 41 winners in his two-hour long match against the Spaniard. The 10th seed was in control of the game from the start winning the first set in a little over 30 minutes.
Gonzalez slammed winner after winner and Nadal could do nothing. Throughout the match the second seed found no way of turning it around. Gonzalez won 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 and goes on to play Tommy Haas in the semis.
For his part, Haas created another upset, beating third seed Nikolay Daydenko in a gruelling five-setter to reach his third semi-final.
Seeded 12th, German Tommy Haas came up with some very good tennis to get the better of his opponent. Having won the first set, Haas was under pressure when Davydenko bounced back taking the second and the third.
But being a set down with Davydenko almost on the brink of a birth in the semi-finals did not disturb the German. Haas clawed back to take the fourth and the firth sets.
