KOCHI: Every sports event needs specific techniques and skills and the quality of these elements help a team dominate the opponent. A perfect coach knows how to constitute his team and is the architect behind the team’s success.In soccer, a coach enjoys fame at par with the players, be it Alex Ferguson, Jose Morinjo, Gud Hiddink or our own Dronacharya awardee Sayed Nayimudeen.Former Indian player C C Jacob describes the role of coach as a mechanic who assembles different kinds of players into a team with a single rhythm.Goal 2012, an inter-collegiate tournament organised by The New Indian Express in Kochi also has some master brains.M Peethambaran of Christ College, Irinjalakkuda, and Narayana Menon of Sree Kerala Varma deserve special mention. It was under the training of Peethambaran that Kerala won two Santosh Trophy tournaments.He trained the Kerala team for four consecutive years, the team entered finals in three occasions and finished third in the Santosh Trophy tournament held in Kochi.His tenure as the Christ College coach extends to 15 years and under him, Christ emerged as one of the best college teams in South India.Narayana Menon is one of the most promising young coaches in India. He trained Indian junior team and the proudest among his achievements is his term with the Indian U-23 team which played the London Olympics qualification round. He is planning to train the junior team which will play in the 2016 Olympics.Under his coaching, the Kerala senior women team entered the final of National women championship in 2006 for the one and only time. He is with Kerala Varma College team since 1995 and the team is considered as one of the greatest in South India. His tenure has produced a number of excellent players from the college. In addition, he is the only coach who has achieved first rank in a coach’s camp conducted by German Football Federation, German Government and the reputed Leipzig University.
