Goa Police promises to crack rape case in 2 days
A British woman claimed she was raped on Friday night in Goa.

Panaji: After a British tourist filed a police complaint claiming that she had been raped in Goa, the police have promised to "crack the case" in two days flat.

The tourist claimed that she was raped on Friday night, following which the police sent her for medical examination.

In the meantime, the police department lost no time in preparing a sketch of the accused.

Goa Chief Minister Digamber Kamat was quoted by PTI as saying, "We are adopting zero tolerance towards such accused. We are dealing seriously with these cases."

The 32-year-old British woman, who had hitched a ride from unidentified person, was assaulted and raped on the city's outskirts on Friday night.

Goa receives more than two million tourists every year, a big chunk of whom are foreigners. Russians and Britishers comprise most foreign tourists.

Tourism Minister Fransisc Pacheco in a statement on Monday said that Goa is "absolutely safe" for tourists. "We are taking adequate precautions to ensure such cases do not take place again," he stated.

Kamat also appealed to the foreigners to take precautions. "Tourists should not hitch rides from unknown people. They should follow all regulations and cooperate with us in making their stay in Goa safer and better," he was quoted by PTI as saying.

Earlier, police arrested a shack owner following a similar complaint by a 27-year-old Russian tourist at the Verna police station.

This is not an isolated case of rape in this year. With the celebrations of New Year, 14 men were accused of molesting two NRI women in Juhu, Mumbai.

Earlier a British journalist had also alleged that she was raped by a rest-house owner in Udaipur. The journalist, a freelancer, was staying in a rest-house owned by one Parvat Singh.

She alleged that Singh raped her on December 23, after she asked him for an extra blanket in the night.

The journalist wrote an e-mail to the British High Commission the next day, informing them of the incident. The High Commission communicated the information to Rajasthan Police and subsequently, Parvat Singh was arrested.

Meanwhile, the court is taking steps to redefine rape. Sexually exploiting a woman on fake promises also accounts to rape. Establishing sexual relationship with a woman on a false promise of marriage amounts to rape, a court in Delhi has held while sentencing a man to seven years in jail for sexually exploiting her neighbour.
