Kolkata: Gorkha Janamukti Morcha leaders, including its chief Bimal Gurung, are using Very High Frequency (VHF) and High Frequency (HF) wireless set to communicate in the Hills.

Joyoshi Das Gupta, District Magistrate of Darjeeling, has written a letter to wireless planning and coordination wing of the Department of Telecommunications seeking assistance in investigating the matter.

It was learnt that the Eastern Command of the Army was also alerted about the matter by the West Bengal state government.

The GJM leaders, fearing arrests and possible tapping of their cell phones, are mobilising masses and keeping an eye on Army and paramilitary movement by communicating through these high frequency wireless sets.

A senior state intelligence official claimed that one can communicate worldwide through High Frequency wireless set but the reach of VHF is nearly 70-75 kilometres. The matter came into light after the state agencies got some wireless signals from the Hills and after investigation it was found that these sets are being used by the GJM leaders.

The origin of most of the signals reported from Tibet, Siliguri, areas bordering Sikkim and Nepal.

“A major concern is that the GJM managed to get access to police communication. A special team has been formed to hunt down these GJM leaders,” a police source said, adding that GJM Chief Bimal Gurung is believed to be hiding somewhere close to the Sikkim border.

Initial probe revealed that most of the wireless sets used by the GJM leaders are illegally procured from Nepal and Tibet via China. As per government rule all legal wireless set dealers are bound to inform the serial numbers of sold wireless sets to Wireless Planning & Coordination Wing.

“This is the reason Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed that foreign countries are helping GJM in their movement for separate Gorkhaland,” said a police officer.

Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee held a high level meeting on Tuesday at the state secretariat and asked administration to take up the challenge to ensure peace in the Hills. The meeting was attended by DGP, Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and officials from Darjeeling.
