Expert nutritionist Pratigya Subramnaian of Fitness First shares with City Express tips and advice to beat the heat and stay fresh this summer.Can you suggest a breakfast menu for the summer?Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and one must never skip it. For the summer one can have oats/muesli with cold milk and nuts and a cool fruit, orange, melon, grapes.Does drinking chilled liquids result in weight gain?No, this is one of the biggest myths ever. The temperature of food does not result in weight gain, but the composition, how many calories, nutritive value of the drink in terms of proteins, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins and minerals. In fact, there is a study that supports the reverse. According to this theory, we know that the food that we eat needs to be brought to room temperature for digestion, which means the body will burn more calories for this, scientifically known as thermic effect of food.Is there any other liquid except water that is low on calorie but helps to hydrate your system?One can have salted lemon water, buttermilk, coconut water, these are very good summer drinks, low in calories and high in salts essential to maintain the electrolyte balance of the body.Does drinking Sugarcane juice result in weight gain?First of all, it is very important to understand that weight gain is a result of several factors, excess calorie input, lack of exercise and a sedentary lifestyle being the foremost. Sugarcane juice is high in calories, basically high in simple sugars that are easy to digest, it is good to have before an activity, but otherwise yes it does add extra calories that can result in weight gain.Summers are mostly humid which results in hair falls. Any food if included in the summer diet that will help prevent it?Protein is very important for maintenance of hair, making sure that you consume enough protein in your diet will take care of good and shiny hair. On an average every individual needs 1gram of protein per kilogram of body weight. Sources of good quality protein are eggs, meat, fish, poultry, milk and milk products like cheese and paneer.Can you give us five quick summer grabs that one can munch in between work? Fruit, cucumber sticks, carrot sticks, a tub of yogurt and some dried fruit like prunes or figs. Summer brings with self a number of diseases like stomach disorders, headache, skin rashes any tips to prevent these. Most of these diseases are due to dehydration or eating outside food. Hence, make sure you keep yourself well-hydrated and try and avoid street food. Eat a lot of curd as it helps to cool and settle the stomach.
