PAIKMAL: The Dalit girl who was allegedly gangraped by the then Paikmal Block Chairman and his cohorts has joined the electoral fray. She is contesting as a BSP candidate from Padampur Zone III Zilla Parishad and her presence has ruffled a few feathers. On May 10, 2008, the then BJD Paikmal Block Chairman Mahesh Agrawal had allegedly lured the girl promising her a job of Anganwadi worker and raped her. Subsequently, she was also raped by five of his accomplices including Kunal Bariha, the nephew of Padampur BJD MLA Bijay Ranjan Singh Bariha. Although all the accused were later arrested and remanded in judicial custody, the incident continues to haunt Bariha and the BJD in the area.After running from pillar to post for justice, the victim said, she took to ballot route to expose those involved in such activities. Reiterating her commitment to fight for women and their rights, she said she chose to contest on BSP ticket drawing inspiration from Mayawati. Mayawati is also a Dalit and has come up the ladder fighting atrocities committed against her, she added.
