CUTTACK: Satichoura Chhak is all set to be anointed the first _ No Tolerance Zone _ in Cuttack by the Commissionerate police. The zone demarcation would entail strict enforcement of traffic rules and immediate action against violators. Riders without helmets and seat belts will be fined which will be extended to violations like triple riding, overspeeding, crossing the zebra lines, driving on the wrong side and using phone while driving. Higher limits of the penal provisions would be imposed on the violators caught in the zone. The zero tolerance zone would be declared as soon as the widening and repair works on the crossing are complete. The work of repair and relaying of the convergent roads on all four sides including the Ring Road, CDA and Shelter Chhak has entered final stages. The crossing would be equipped with high-mast lighting and electronic traffic signalling systems. The refurbished crossing would be ready in a fortnight. In the meantime, the commuters would be sensitised on the traffic rules, a senior officer said. The Commissionerate Police had first planned to have no tolerance zones at Khan Nagar and Madhupatna crossings but they were not found to be feasible due to various reasons. Satichoura Chhak is an important crossing with heavy traffic as it links the CDA or Abhinab Bidanasi to the heartland of Cuttack. On the other hand, the police in association with the city administration have decided to go full throttle on the anti-encroachment drive. With the Traffic Management Committee under Commissioner BK Sharma stepping on the pedal, a decade-long stay of the High Court on Goudagada on the Mahanadi Ring Road linking Cantonment Road has been vacated. The stretch, which had been under unauthorised occupation of garages and automobile accessories shops for over 10 years, was cleared on Tuesday freeing wide space that could now be developed into a double way with dividers in place. The Roads and Buildings Division under which the road falls would soon start the work.Plans are afoot to convert the vacant spaces into vending zones and parking lots. There will be discussions with the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) authorities on how the space can be best utilised for the benefit of the people, the officer said.
