Jaipur: Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday asked urban bodies to identify challenges and find practical solutions in order to deliver better services to the people.
Naidu also laid emphasis on bringing transparency and accountability in the system to improve quality of service. Speaking at the inaugural session of a workshop on 'Urban Transformation Blueprint', he said that smart leadership was necessary for successful urban transformation.
Smart leadership of urban bodies must be able to understand problems and make necessary planning for the well-planned development of cities, he said. Naidu also called for the finding out of possibilities for developing satellite towns, heritage city, malls, special hubs, ring road, ring rail road (for trains so that trains do not enter the city if not required), connectivity of airports to Metro and good networks for tourist destinations.
During the address, the Minister also commended Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje who stops her cavalcade at traffic signals, saying it helped to understand the problems of the common man.
Raje, while addressing the session, said taking people into confidence and continuous dialogue with them is necessary for the planned urban development. To develop model cities, we need to understand the nature and the local requirements of the cities, she said.
Thousands of crores of rupees are required for the development projects to provide quality services to the people in cities and government alone can not do this, she said, seeking possibilities of Public Private Partnership and other viable options.
If people get facilities of good quality, they will also pay for it, a release quoting her said. Members of the Chief Minister's Advisory Council Swati Ramnathan and Ramesh Ramnathan also gave presentations regarding planned development of cities focusing on urban roads, traffic support infrastructure, drainage, water supply, sewerage and solid waste management.
Country Director of Asian Development Bank Teresa Kho, represenatives from private companies, credit rating agencies, chartered accountants and government officials were present at the two-day workshop, the release said.
