BALASORE: A debt-ridden farmer in Balasore district allegedly committed suicide after failing to repay the loans he had taken for farming. Worried over crop loss due to untimely rain and debts, Maheswar Sahu (50) of Sarsankh village under Soro police limits took the extreme step on Wednesday evening.Sources said Sahu, a sharecropper, was found hanging from the ceiling of his house. As his wife was absent, a neighbour spotted his body and informed the locals. Though he was rushed to a nearby hospital, doctors declared him brought dead. His family members said he remained depressed for the last couple of weeks over the low crop yield from his two acres due to lack of rains. “Floods had damaged the crops in the first season and this time, 40 per cent of the crop was destroyed due to lack of water,” said his wife Minati. A case has been registered. Soro Tehsildar Sambit Nayak has initiated a probe. “We are cross-checking his land records and the loan amount,’ he said.
