New Delhi: India as a prospective F1 destination has got a major boost from the horse's mouth. Forrmula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone is "personally enthusiastic" about bringing a round in the country in the near future.
The President and CEO of the F1 management issued the statement in Chennai, saying that an Indian racing the F1 circuit will add to the popularity of the event.
Ecclestone added that Karun Chandok's debut at the GP2 series is the ideal stepping stone for the Indian driver to get an F1 seat.
"I have been guiding and supporting Karun in his quest to compete in GP2 as he progresses towards Formula One. This is an exciting time for him and I wish him all the success for the season ahead," Ecclestone said.
The GP2 series this year has 13 of 26 drivers in the field, having benefited from F1 experience either in testing or races.
United Breweries Chairman Vijay Mallya had proposed a plan to host an F1 race in the Capital and had met Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit for a stree-style F1 race, much like the one in Monaco.
Narain Karthikeyan was the first Indian to compete in Forumla 1 in 2005.
