KOCHI: “With 100 per cent literacy, Kerala should also strive to achieve cultural development. The inertia showed by the literates of Kerala has become a blot on the state which should be wiped out at the earliest,” said writer Babu Kuzhimattom. He was inaugurating ‘Aksharakoott’, an event to mark the first anniversary of Ernakulam becoming the first fully literate district in the country, here on Wednesday.He said that though the state has achieved 100 per cent literacy, the state still has to go a long way. District Panchayat president Eldose Kunnappilly who presided over the function said that the district panchayat is straining every nerve to become the first district to achieve 100 per cent literacy in total primary education. “With this aim in mind, the district panchayat along with district literacy mission has come up with a project titled ‘Vidyapoornima’,” he said. Kunnapilly also said that the government’s antipathy to preraks who undertakes classes for the people under state literacy mission has been affecting the success of many programmes. “Despite many efforts have been made by the district panchayat, the issue remains unresolved,” he said. The ten grama panchayats - Karukutti, Puthanvelikkara, Kottuvalli, Nayarambalam, Kumbalangi, Mazhu vannoor, Payipra, Piravom, Pallarimangalam and Ashamannoor - were also honoured on the ocassion. Kothamangalam, the first municipality to achieve 100 per cent literacy in the district was also given due recognition. Varapuzha, Chengamanadu, Manjapra, Kanjoor and Kumbalam grama panchayat which have put forth home-grown projects to achieve 100 per cent in total primary education were also honoured. Late former collector of Ernakulam K R Rajan who played a major role in making Ernakulam the first district to achieve 100 per cent literacy was commemorated on the ocassion. Grama panchayat presidents, block panchayat presidents, chairmen of various municipalities and education standing committee chairmen from various states also attended the function.
