The Platinum Jubilee Celebration Committee and the Department of English of Loyola College organised a felicitation program to honour Professor K Chellappan, an eminent English professor, here on Wednesday.
On the eve of Teacher’s Day, the former students of Chellappan, who are now professors in various colleges, organised a program to celebrate the work and contibution of their teacher. During the ceremony a book on his contributions to English literature, titled ‘One Humanity, One Literature’ was also launched.
Professor Chellappa’s contributions to comparative literature have their own place in Indian academics. His magnum opus ‘Shakespeare and Ilango as Tragedians: A Comparative Study’ is still a subject of discussion among the scholars of Comparative Literature.
The book was released by former Minister of Education and Finance, Prof K Anbazhagan.
“All through history, the pride of Tamil language has been highlighted by people like Constanzo Beschi, G U Pope, Robert Caldwell, etc. Likewise, through his comparison of Shakespeare and Ilango, Chellappan has brough to light the glory of English language,” said K Anbalagan.
Dr D Avvai Natarajan, former Vice Chancellor of Tamil University, said, “Chellappan through his contribution to comparative literature, has conducted a solemn marriage between English and Tamil. In Karnataka, every English professor’s quoting the Kannada language’s pride and various dimensions in their English writing. Our English scholars too must follow this tradition”.
Eminent poet Erode Tamizhanban read a poetry on Chellappan and orator Silamboli Chellappan reminisced his days with Chellappan in college.
In his acceptance speech Chellappan said, “Comparative Literature is for mutual illumination. When I compared Shakespeare’s Tragedy with Ilango’s Silapathikaram I found that the nuances of Greek drama resembled with the latter. I can say Eastern literature shows sublimation of the sinner, while Western literature talks about their redemption. When I stepped into my career as a teacher, I started my first lecture saying, ‘I dreamt a dream and thought that life was a beauty; I woke up and found that life is a duty’. Even now I am following those words” said K Chellappan.
After the event, he handed over an endowment to conduct lectures on comparative literature in Loyola College.
