CHENNAI: Remember the elusive youth caught on camera nearly a month ago who was suspected to have killed pawn-cum-jewellery shop owner Ganesh Ram (28) at his shop in Maduravoyal? He has been nabbed thanks to some smart work by the public, with police help. Accused Ramjayam alias Appu (26), an engineering graduate, ran out of luck when was caught by the public in a different case — attempt to rob two women at Pallikaranai. They handed him over to the police station where he began singing. He confessed to having committed the Maduravoyal murder on April 14, as he needed to repay a loan of `10 lakh, the police claimed on Sunday.Senior officers said that on Saturday evening, an unidentified man gained entry into the house of Chandra Prabha (59) at Second Street, Meenakshipuram, Pallikaranai, claiming to be a health department staff doing the rounds to distribute medicine for swine flu. Suddenly, he whipped out a knife and threatened Chandra Prabha to remove her gold jewellery and attempted to snatch her chain. She raised an alarm, but he overpowered her and slit the right side of her neck. Hearing her mother call for help, Chandra Prabha’s daughter Rakhi (27) came running out of her room screaming. But the man attacked her and caused injury on the back of her neck. Chandra Prabha ran out of her house calling for help and neighbours, who rushed to the spot, chased the man as he attempted to escape and caught him with the help of a Pallikaranai sub-inspector on patrol.Upon inquiry, police identified him as Ramjayam of Nellukadai St, Parangipettai, Chidambaram.
