KOCHI: The Empowered panel on Mullaperiyar will visit Idukki dam on Friday to assess its strength.Committee members C D Thattae and D K Mehta will arrive at the dam, along with the representatives of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.The panel members will then visit the Mullaperiyar dam in the evening. They will inspect results of the strengthening tests carried out earlier at the dam. Mullaperiyar Cell chairman M K Parameswaran Nair, Irrigation Department Chief Engineer P Lathika and James Wilson will represent Kerala before the panel while R Subramanyam of the Cauvery Cell and Chief Engineer Rajagopal will represent Tamil Nadu.On Friday, the team will visit Idukki dam and assess its capacity to hold water from Mullaperiyar in case of a dam burst. In the evening, the panel members will check the results of the strengthening tests recently carried out at Mullaperiyar.Panel member arrivesC D Thattae, one of the two members of the Empowered panel on Mullapperiyar, arrived at the Kochi Airport on Thursday evening from Delhi.Thattae told reporters that the panel would try its level best to sort out the issue.He said that as the matter is under the consideration of the Supreme Court, he might not be able to comment on the issue.However, he hoped that the panel could settle the issue permanently.
