KOCHI: The commissioning of Edappally Railway Over Bridge (ROB), scheduled on January last week, will be delayed. The work is currently progressing on a snail’s pace and Kochiites will have to wait for another two months for the project to be realised. The work to surface 1.5 km-long approach roads on either side is on progress. But, the drainage and hand-rail works of the bridge have not yet started.North Edappally Corporation Councillor M P Mahesh said the delay was mainly owing to the improper estimation carried out by the National Highway Authority of India.“This route will be vulnerable to road accidents even if the work is completed this year. The 600-m long-two-lane bridge is 7.5 m wide and has a tarred surface. But, compared to other bridges, the width of the bridge is too small to contain vehicles from both side,” he said."Besides, there are no traffic signals and precautionary measures. The opening of the bridge can lead to a major traffic problem. The Kunumpuram Tower Line will block the heavy containers passing through the route owing its low height. The current width of the bridge is not as per the present requirement,” Mahesh said. The Public Works Department officials said the construction works would be completed within two months. “Tarring of the approach road is on progress and the construction works of the main hand-rail and drainage would be completed within two months. The inauguration will have to be postponed further,” PWD official said.
