BANGALORE: The state government is planning to extend the duration of night traffic ban on Gundlupet-Wayanad highway (NH-212) by three more hours to make it a 12-hour ban. Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda set the record straight over his stand on the traffic ban in Bandipur. “There have been deaths of elephants, deer and black bucks in the area due to vehicular movement. I have conveyed this to Kerala CM Oommen Chandy,” Gowda told reporters here on Monday. “I cannot allow night traffic on road that passes through the Bandipur National Park. Apart from the animal deaths, there is the problem of naxalism lurking in the area,” said the chief minister. The state government has imposed a ban on vehicular movement on NH-212 and NH-67 routes passing through Bandipur National Park between 9 pm and 6 am. NH-212 is an important highway for traders in Kerala.Since Gundlupet is a major vegetable and fruit market for Kerala traders, the night traffic ban has adversely affected their business.
