New Delhi: Two people have been arrested after they allegedly abducted a 22-year-old man in Delhi’s Chhawla area, dismembered the victim’s limbs with a carpet cutter and threw the pieces into two separate septic tanks.
The deceased has been identified as Sachin, who works at a carpet shop in the area. He left home early morning on May 12 but didn’t reach his workplace. When he last spoke on the phone that morning, Sachin had said that he was taking measurements of curtains in a nearby area.
Soon after, his phone was switched off and after his family could not trace him, they filed a complaint at Baba Haridas Nagar Police Station.
Three days after he went missing, Sachin’s phone was picked by a then-unidentified person who claimed that the carpet shop worker had been kidnapped. Before the family could ask any questions, the phone was switched off again. At night, the family got a call from the number and the same person asked for a ransom of Rs 50 lakh while warning them against informing the police.
Sachin’s father, though, did inform the police, who began an investigation into the case. “We talked to the family members, especially his wife, to confirm that no personal enmity or dispute was the reason behind this kidnapping,” said Sibhesh Singh, DCP Dwarka.
The wife pointed the police towards one of Sachin’s friends, Varun, with whom the victim was going to start a business together. The call was received two days before he went missing.
The police came to know more about Varun when they talked to Sachin’s fellow workers at the carpet shop. Varun was an expert of laying polyvinyl flooring. His phone was switched off and he was not at his rented room in Delhi. Upon talking the neighbours, police got to know that Varun left with his family without telling them where he was going.
Police also raided the location of last ransom call — Sonipat — but they found nothing there.
Five days later, the abductors called again and negotiated the ransom money with Sachin’s father. The abductors came down to Rs 10 lakhs from their initial demand. They called his father to Azadpur Chowk in the national capital but they themselves didn’t turn up.
Meanwhile, when call details of Sachin and Varun’s phones were procured and analysed, it was revealed that both SIM cards were being used through the same mobile phone. The police then named Varun as the main suspect in the case.
A police team was sent to Varun’s native place, Muzaffarnagar in Bihar. There, they got to know that Varun’s actual name was Bhushan Kumar Singh. He was then tracked down to a different village, 20 kilometres away from his own.
The police also arrested Vicky, Varun’s brother-in-law.
During interrogations, the duo initially misled the police but later broke down and confessed to having abducted, killed Sachin.
“Vicky had killed Sachin on the day he was abducted. They chopped off his limbs, head and other body parts with the help of a carpet cutter. They threw the body parts in septic tanks,” said the DCP Singh.
Varun and Vicky hatched the plan to earn easy money. Varun knew Sachin as they were in the same profession and the former knew that Sachin’s family, if pressurised, could sell half of their plot located in Delhi’s Agrasen Park to pay Rs 50 lakh as ransom to save their only son.
