A woman working as superintendent at the government treasury here was allegedly burnt to death by her husband, who was in an inebriated condition at Khajamalai Government Staff quarters here.
The man Sundarraj (54) was working at the city corporation office. He is said to be an alcoholic who invariably returned home in an inebriated condition and picked up quarrels with his wife Arulmani (50).
The couple has a daughter, who is married and a son, who is studying in Chennai. On Saturday night, Sundarraj, who returned home in an inebriated condition, demanded money from his wife to buy more liquor. When Arulmani refused, he allegedly poured kerosene over her body and set her ablaze.
The neighbours who saw Arulmani rushing outside, doused the fire. They called the ‘108’ ambulance and sent her to the Tiruchy GH. She was battling for life with burn injuries and died on Sunday morning.
Sundarrajan also suffered burn injuries on his legs and was undergoing treatment. The neighbours said they did not cared much about the quarrel last night as it was customary.
They only realised the gravity of the situation when Arulmani came outside the house with flames over body.
