KOCHI: The maintenance dredging of the Kochi channel is getting delayed indefinitely. More than a month after the proposed date to carry out the work, the Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) has not even begun the work.As per the contract between the Cochin Port Trust (CPT) and the DCI, the maintenance dredging of the Kochi channel was supposed to begin by the end of May. The maintenance dredging of the channel came to a standstill in December 2010 after Jaisu Shipping left the work halfway."For the past six months maintenance dredging has not been done in a proper manner. As of now only a bucket dredger of the CPT is being used for the purpose. Recently the CPT entered into a contract with the DCI.The Rs 400 crore dredging work was meant to clear the channel for incoming vessels. But the DCI has not even begun the work till now," sources pointed out.It is learnt that the DCI has agreed to bring some dredgers, which are currently engaged in dredging activities at Kolkata for the purpose. Sources pointed out that the DCI has only a couple of its dredgers in working condition and that is why the dredging work got delayed for such a long time.
