Doordarshan to telecast award winning indie films
The films which are going to be premiered with Doordarshan will receive Rs 25 lakh as the remuneration money.

New Delhi: Prasar Bharati, the statutory body to govern Doodarshan's broadcast policy, has agreed to telecast independent films after 10 PM. As per this decision, the films that have been already shown on the small screen will get Rs 15 lakh while the films that will be aired for the first time on DD will get Rs 25 lakh.

This reaction from Prasar Bharati has come in response to a campaign initiated by a group of independent filmmakers. The campaign was called Save Indie Cinema and filmmakers such as Onir, Ashutosh Gowariker and Resul Pookutty were among the active members of it.

The Save Indie Cinema campaign believed that the government needs to take steps to ensure that independent filmmaking doesn't become an obsolete tradition.

The campaign raised relevant questions about the distribution methods of a film. In the current scenario, the tickets to two films with entirely different budget scales are priced at the same value which restricts a better visibility of the film.

The campaign also questioned the quality of the content of the films and serials running on TV.

Prasar Bharati's recommendations are the acceptance of the need to preserve the independent cinema. This step is further supposed to curb the regressive nature of popular filmmaking. You can see the Save Indie petition here.
