KOCHI: Giving a clear message to the patients and the government, doctors at the major government hospitals in the district conducted common specialty out-patient (OP) service as part of their indefinite strike to be held from July 30.Normally the specialty out-patient service is conducted in separate rooms. “It was held in a combined manner on Monday without affecting the services offered to the patients, Dr Joseph Chacko, district president, Kerala Government Medical Officers Association (KGMOA), told Express. The common OP service was held at Aluva, Muvattupuzha, Tripunithura, Kothamangalam, Paravoor and Karuvelipady, he said.Only urgent surgeries were conducted by the doctors. The surgeries posted for the coming days have been cancelled and the patients were informed about it, he said. A taluk-level meeting of government doctors was held at Tripunithura on Monday to discuss the strike plan. Similar meetings will be held at Perumbavoor and Fort Kochi on Tuesday, at Muvattupuzha and Kothamangalam on Wednesday and at North Parur and Aluva on Thursday. The general body meeting of KGMOA district unit will be held at Ernakulam General Hospital on Friday.The meeting will brief the doctors about the state- wide indefinite strike. In all, 260 doctors and medicos will keep off the work to press for their demands.Dr Chacko said that the government doctors in the district had been keeping away from private practice as part of the strike.Heads of various institutions like Ernakulam General Hospital, Aluva District Hospital, eight taluk hospitals, 14 block PHCs and around 60 PHCs will hand over the keys of the institutions ahead of the strike, Dr Chacko said.
