CHENNAI: A doctor couple has been accused of cheating three businessmen of `1.37 crore after promising to secure medical seats for their wards. The case took a curious turn when the duo, allegedly arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by one of the aggrieved parties with the Kotturpuram police, was released on Sunday evening. While the cops claimed that the complaints had been transferred to the Central Crime Branch, the complainants cried foul.Advocate P Rajkumar of Kilpauk told Express that his client A Kumar (43) shelled out `55 lakh to Dr S Senthil Kumar and his wife Dr S Chamundeswari for a medical seat under the payment quota. Dr Senthil Kumar was professor of anatomy at a leading medical college hospital in Porur, while his wife ran a clinic. Kumar, a resident of Alwarpet, a pharmaceutical company owner, wanted the seat for his daughter K Divya. “He was referred to the couple by a friend and made the payment about two months ago,” the advocate said.Similarly, K Ali (41), a real estate businessman of Purasawalkam, paid `41 lakh to the couple for a medical seat for his son Faizal. Samson (41) of Teynampet also parted with `41 lakh for admission of his daughter. All the three businessmen were referred to the doctor couple by different persons, Rajkumar claimed.Weeks passed and medical admissions were coming to an end, but there was no response from the couple, he alleged. They were evasive whenever the matter was raised. Growing suspicious, Samson filed a complaint at the Kotturpuram police station on Saturday evening. Registering an FIR under Sec 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) against the couple, inspector B Jeyasanker picked them up for questioning.Hearing about the developments, Kumar and Ali also rushed to file complaints at the police station. Things took a shocking turn, when the police refused to accept their complaints. Advocate Rajkumar alleged that the couple was kept in the police station during the night, but there was no interrogation. The aggrieved parties and their lawyers too maintained vigil at the police station, he said.On Sunday evening, senior police officers arrived to take stock of the situation. Around 6 pm, the couple ran out of their room and made a dash to their car and was whisked away. “When we asked the police, they said the cases were being transferred to the CCB,” the advocate said. While denying that the couple was arrested, inspector Jeyasanker admitted that an FIR had been registered against them on the complaint filed by Samson. “We have transferred all the three complaints to the CCB, as large sums of money are involved,” he said.
