New Delhi: A man has been sentenced to a year and half in jail by a Delhi court for forcing his wife to attempt suicide by beating her up daily after drinking liquor. "This is the case where victim was not only mentally harassed but also physically tortured. Cruelty in present case is of such a higher degree of intensity that the victim was forced to take such a step to free herself from daily beatings and harassment," said Metropolitan Magistrate Kiran Gupta, sentencing West Delhi resident Ashok Kumar.
The court noted victim Rekha's submission that Kumar used to get drunk and beat her up daily. He also used to ask her to bring money from her parents for food and other basic expenses while he himself did no work to earn a living. The judge said "the convict had made the complainant's life burdensome to an extent that she was left with no other option except to commit suicide to end her miseries which she had to undergo daily."
The court rejected Ashok's plea for leniency, saying "the act of the convict is of such a nature that it cannot be condoned." In her complaint, Rekha had said her husband fought with her and beat her up mercilessly on September 23, 2007 and told her to get out of the house.
She said after the fight, she sent her minor daughter out on pretext of getting some medicines. The girl deposed in the court that when she returned home from market, her father was not at home and her mother, Rekha was hanging from the ceiling. She said she began screaming and her neighbours rushed to help and took her mother to the hospital where she survived after necessary medical care.
