New Delhi: The Delhi High Court's move to contain the plastic bag menace has received a lukewarm response from the city government, which says the problem is here to stay.
The court ordered the Delhi government to form a panel of experts to look into a possible ban on plastic bags.
Among the many measures proposed by the panel was the introduction of "buy back offers" for consumers purchasing the same products in plastic packets.
"This will facilitate reduction in littering and at the same time the manufacturer can recycle and effectively work out a collection and disposal system," PTI quoted the Delhi government as saying.
The Delhi Plastic Bag (Manufacture, Sales and Usage) and Non-Biodegradable Garbage (Control) Act provides for making "usage" of non-biodegradable plastic bags a punishable offence.
A ban on plastic bags below the thickness of 30 microns is already in force in Kozhikode. The city authorities say legal action would be taken against persons manufacturing, selling and distributing carrybags below the thickness of 30 microns.
