New Delhi: It's been almost a month since the Delhi braveheart was brutally gangraped when she boarded the bus after an auto rickshaw refused to take to her destination. The auto rickshaws in Delhi seem to be above the law and everyday girls and women face harassment due to their autocratic ways. The national capital is in the grip of an auto mafia gripe and the government has not been able to control them.
A 70-year-old lady of Delhi, Kusum Khanna, is looking for answers to a question but till now neither the Delhi government nor the Delhi Traffic Police have been able to come up a satisfactory explanation. Actually there are 125 auto rickshaws running on the roads of Delhi which have given their addresses as that of Kususm's.
Kusum lives in East Delhi with her family. The matter came to her notice when she received noticed from the traffic police about the auto rickshaws. Whenever there was any complaint against any one of those 125 vehicles and their drivers, the police used to come to her house to investigate.
Later a RTI enquiry revealed that 125 auto rickshaws had given her address in their running on her address. Actually Kusum Khanna had been a victim of the auto mafia. According to the rule there can be only one auto registered at one address. But the fear of being caught has driven the auto mafia to get vehicles registered on bogus addresses.
This is one of the reasons due to which auto rickshaw drivers are able to escape easily after committing a crime. The Delhi government and the police are aware of the fact, but have failed to curb the menace.
According to official estimates there are more than 30,000 illegal autos. Delhi Transport Minister Ramakant Goswami blames the traffic department for the auto mafias in the national capital, but there has been no concrete action. While there are several proposals to have more pre-paid booths, GPS in autos and high-security number plates, but the reality is that the auto rickshaws are above the law.
