BHUBANESWAR: Apollo Hospitals, Bhubaneswar, has introduced the latest interventional radiology technique called DC beads chemoembolisation to treat liver cancer patients.DC beads are tiny spherical particles that absorb the chemotherapeutic drugs and are delivered directly into the small blood vessels that ply the tumour in the liver. As a result, the drug would not go into the body circulation and thereby cut down side effects drastically while enhancing effectiveness of the medication. The first procedure was done on a 73-year-old patient by senior consultant interventional radiologist Dr Manas Ranjan Kar. After the first month follow up, the tumour was found to have reduced significantly and had undergone complete liquefaction without any blood supply.
