THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Corporation Council on Wednesday decided to set up a committee to study the allegations raised by Poojappura councillor K Maheswaran Nair regarding the mismanagement of a temple in the Poojappura park, which is owned by the Corporation, but allegedly run by private parties. A resolution introduced in the Council by the Poojappura councillor said that the ‘Mandapam’ owned by the Corporation there for the ‘pooja’ celebrations has been hijacked by a group of people who have been collecting money in the name of the temple and misusing it. The ‘poojaveypu’ ceremony is conducted by the Travancore royal family at the Mandapam. Some 25 years ago, an idol of the Goddess was used by the locals here for the ceremony. Later, a temple came up just behind the idol which has now gone into the hands of private parties, Maheswaran Nair said. ‘’The Corporation has entrusted Hindustan Latex with the upkeep of the park, the Poojappura grounds and the premises of the park. They are using the services of a security guard at the Mandapam at night. Still, during night hours, construction works are carried out near the temple premises stealthily. The Corporation should look into the alleged encroachments and the big corruption practices these people indulge in. Strict action should be taken against them,’’ Maheswaran Nair said. Following the allegations, which were reported sometime back, the locals are vigilant on the issue. But the Corporation should either entrust the conduct of the festival to the Devaswom Board, carry it out by itself or form a committee to look into the matters of the temple, the councillor demanded. To this, Mayor K Chandrika said that a committee would be constituted with the Revenue Officer, Health Officer, Corporation Engineer and Corporation Secretary as members to study the issue and submit a report, after which the Council would decided on further action.
