Developing quality standards and specifying regulations for diagnostic centers will curtail sub-standard diagnostic centres, feels Governor

“Today, we have made rapid strides in modern science and diagnosis. The advancements in medical science have been an added advantage,” said Governor K Rosaiah.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Central Reference Laboratory of the Hitech Diagnostics Centre at Purasawalkam recently, the Governor added, “Rapid urbanisation and advancements on the socio-economic front have changed our lifestyle patterns, leading to many new diseases.”

He said that we have to minimise and curtail the increase in the number of patients with diabetes, cancer tuberculosis, heart ailments and other diseases.

He added, “The role played by diagnostic laboratories in accurate and early diagnosis will help have a check on further increase in the level of diseases and will help to cure them.”

He felt that there was a need to enhance the quality and competency of the labs on a par with international standards. “Developing quality standards and specifying regulations for diagnostic centers will curtail the mushrooming of sub-standard diagnostic centres,” he said.

The Central Reference Laboratory, established at a cost of Rs 12 crore, would not only enhance the quality of diagnosis, but will also facilitate quick and accurate analysis.

The Governor also appreciated the efforts taken by National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, to regulate the laboratories and diagnostic centres.

Dr SP Ganesan, chairman and managing director, Hitech Diagnostic Centre, said that Hitech had completed 25 years of service and could now check 5,000 samples to 20,000 parameteres  every day.
