Private engineering colleges will face strict action, including derecognition, if they are found charging extra fee (more than the stipulated fee) from students who have secured seats through the Common Entrance Test (CET).
The fee structure fixed by the state government for engineering /technology /architecture courses is Rs 36,090 or Rs 41,590 in private unaided colleges. In government and aided colleges, the fee is Rs 18,090. Beyond this fixture, private aided and unaided colleges can charge only Rs 3,090 as “other fees.”
A meeting was held here on Monday attended by Higher Education minister C T Ravi, Medical Education minister S A Ramdas, Principal Secretary for Higher Education Siddaiah, Director of Technical Education H U Talwar among others.
Following the meeting, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) issued a circular to all colleges affiliated to it stating clearly that engineering colleges cannot collect any fee apart from tution fees, university registration and other fees and examination fee.
In case of violations, the colleges may face withdrawal of affiliation and recommendation to the All India Council of Technical Education for derecognition.
Besides engineering colleges, sources at the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) informed that even medical colleges were charging extra fees. Students and parents have on KEA’s Facebook page posted comments that Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), a constituent college of K L E University - Belgaum, was charging `4.5 lakh for a medical seat, which is otherwise fixed at Rs 46,000.
Deepak Dwivedi on Monday posted, “Although the fee structure for general merit candidates fixed this year in private institutions is `46,000, then why is JNMC fee structure `4.5 lakh under CET government quota???
Jyothi Vinod last week slammed the KEA with her post: “You have given JNMC Belgaum in the medical seat matrix without informing us students that they will be charging a fee of `4.5 lakh. Why did you play with the fate of students?” Chancellor of K L E University and Rajya Sabha MP Dr Prabhakar B Kore told Express, “Ours is a deemed university and the fee is uniform for all students. We have our own costs to cater to and the government has not given us a hospital or anything. Anyhow, I will sit with my management to see if the fees can be reviewed.”
