BHUBANESWAR: Expressing grave concern over the chipping of a stone slab from the western entrance of the Jagannath Temple in Puri on Tuesday, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik requested the Centre to take special care for protection of the 800-year-old temple. In a letter to Union Minister for Culture Kumari Shelja, the Chief Minister requested her to ask the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), in charge of the preservation and maintenance of the temple since 1975, to take adequate measures for the protection of the temple. He also demanded action against officials whose neglect led to the falling of the stone slab. Naveen said the temple was crowded with devotees because of the holy month of Kartik when the slab fell. He said such an incident during Kartik month has hurt the sentiments of the devotees.
