THIRUVANATHAPURAM: The Second State Deaf Cricket Championship will be held at the Medical College Ground in the city this weekend, the Kerala Sports Council for the Deaf (KSCD) announced on Friday. Medical College principal Ramdas Pisharady will inaugurate the championship at 9 am.Seven teams representing Ernakulam, Palakkad, Thiruvananthapuram, Kannur, Kottayam, Kollam and Malappuram are in the fray. Varkala Kahar MLA will give away the prizes on Sunday. Pooojappura councillor K Maheswaran Nair will preside over the function.KSCD leaders, in a statement, voiced their grievance that the organisation, despite being the lone one for the deaf in the sports sector, receives scant attention from the government. Despite repeated reminders, the government has not given the KSCD recognition and consequently, deaf sports persons are denied grace marks and grants.Since its inception in 1983, the KSCD has succeeded in producing sportspersons of merit, KSCD honorary general secretary G Suresh Kumar said. Five of the players now attending the Asia-Pacific Football Tournament in South Korea are from Kerala. Last year, a female player had attended the Asia-Pacific Badminton Championships In Korea, he said.Till now, the KSCD has not received more than Rs 30,000 as grant from the government. But organising a sports event, attended by about 800 athletes, can cost as much as Rs 5 lakh, Suresh Kumar said.
