THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: This year also, things were not different. Revellers in the city who were in ‘new year spirit’ could not escape the vigilant cops. Following combing, cases were charged against 57 persons for drunken driving and petty cases were registered against 200 persons for other offences during the new year eve celebrations.  But one couldn’t say that things are not better. The situation has changed from the past years. “The number of cases charged related to the new year celebrations has come down compared to earlier years. No accidents were reported related to the celebrations,” said Assistant Commissioner D Vijayan. The police had made elaborate arrangements to prevent trouble. “But we made it sure that it did not obstruct the celebrations,” Vijayan added.  Around 2,000 policemen were deployed to ensure their presence in every nook and corner of the city. An additional 500 personnel were deployed during new year’s eve. The number was higher than that of the past years. For this, the city police had sought the help of Crime Branch and other special units. Shadow police were deployed in places where celebrations were at their peak. Cameras were installed at railway station, Kovalam and Shangumugham. As many as 250 places, including coastal areas, were marked as special pockets and given special attention. The torrential rain that lashed the city for a continuous ten hours could not mar the celebrations. The cops now heave a sigh of relief that the celebrations did not end on a sad note with accidents or tensions.
