Kolkata: 'Chitrangada, the Crowning Wish', which has hit the screens, is a self retrospective trip for director Rituparno Ghosh, who also dons the hat of an actor in the film.
"The film is about acceptance of a person's identity... It isn't just about sexuality or one's image with which he is identified," Ghosh said here of the film whose Indian premiere was held at the Osian Cinefan Film Festival in Delhi
in July and has been shown at some of the prestigious festivals abroad.
In the film he essays the role of a choreographer directing Rabindranath Tagore's epochal dance drama 'Chitrangada' who has an intense relationship with the drummer of the performing group (Jisshu Sengupta). "This film is of a different mold. It is not marked by acting in a particular theatrical way by the cast. There s constant fluidity in the characterisation," said Ghosh.
He has to his credit National Award as best director twice, an impressive eight times in the best feature film category and once in the best screenplay category. About his role as a choreographer in 'Chitrangada', Ghosh said it was made possible with training from Odissi danseuse Sharmila Biswas.
"I couldn't have become Rudra (the choreographer) without Sharmiladi (Biswas). I learnt the expressions of a dancer from her," he said. Debojyoti Mishra, who composed music for eight songs in the film, said, "I think Chitrangada is by far Rituporno Ghosh's best as director."
Raima Sen, who has a small but important role in 'Chitrangada' said, "For me the most important thing remains it is a Rituparno Ghosh film." Arghyakamal Mitra, who had bagged the National Award for best editing for his work in Rituparno Ghosh's 'Abohomaan' has edited this film too.
In the film, which has been produced by Venkatesh Films, Rudra (Ghosh), a well-known choreographer is set to stage 'Chitrangada' - a dance drama penned by Rabindranath Tagore about a Manipur princess who sheds her manly image after meeting Pandava prince Arjun and marries him.
In the story percussionist Partho (Jisshu Sen Gupta) is introduced to Rudra by Kasturi (Raima) as a drummer. Partho and Rudra develop a romantic relationship with Rudra embarking on a sex change procedure.
