CHENNAI: Public Works Department (PWD) engineers were constantly monitoring the levels in reservoirs following the Meteorological Department’s prediction of more than 25 cm rainfall in the city. “Water will be released in the range of 250 cusecs to 2,000 cusecs if the rains are heavy so that no breach occurs. We have also given a notice to the district administration as well as people living near the banks,” said Chief engineer of PWD’s water resources department S S Rajagopal.Meanwhile, PWD Secretary M Saikumar, in a press release on Thursday evening, said that since surplus water from Red Hills, Chembarambakkam and Poondi reservoirs would be released depending upon the intensity of the rains, people living in low-lying areas along these reservoirs have been advised to move to safer places.Besides, the PWD has made arrangements for stationing personnel to remove any blockage at 20 different points, including Buckingham Canal and Okkiyam Maduvu, where rainwater flows into the sea.Helplines for Chennai, Cuddalore Rajagopal said that in Nagapattinam, the chief engineer of Tiruchy region has been asked to camp and take precautionary measures. He said the PWD has also set up an emergency cell at Cuddalore as well. He urged people to contact PWD engineers in case of any difficulties in the flow of water in channels.
