CHENNAI: An unidentified Korean girl, aged around 20, drowned in the swimming pool of a star hotel here on Friday night.Sources said that the girl, who came with her friends, was in a highly inebriated condition that she was not even able to move inside the hotel. Later, while the girl was walking along the pool side she reportedly slipped into the pool. The girl’s friends, who pulled her out and brought her to the lobby, raised an alarm seeking medical assistance from the hotel authorities. There was no first aid kit available in the hotel and there was no in-house doctor as well, sources said and added that there was no lifeguard present near the pool, making it an unsafe area for anybody walking there. Though there were some doctors at the scene, they were unable to help the girl due to the interference by hotel authorities. A woman doctor present amidst the crowd said “When I rushed to the spot claiming to be a doctor and wanted to give the girl a CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation), as the victim was thoroughly drenched and cold, I was almost pushed out saying that an ambulance had been called.” Another senior doctor, who was present, said “The hotel authorities have to be blamed. Running a huge hotel without emergency medical assistance is almost a crime. What can we do when we want to help but don’t have the equipment or the assistance needed in an emergency like this?”The woman doctor said that the girl did not have the needed pulse count and her throat was filled with water, which could only mean that she had died at least 10 minutes before she attended her. Hotel authorities were unavailable for comment.
