CHENNAI: A lorry driver met with a gory death as iron rods pierced through his body after his tanker lorry hit a stationary vehicle near Thiruneermalai on Saturday night.Traffic police said C Ramachandran (38) of Cuddalore was on his way to Puducherry transporting petrol and diesel in four compartments of his tanker from Indian Oil Corporation at Korukkupet to Puducherry with his cleaner Balan.The tanker lorry was at the Tambaram-Maduravoyal bypass near Thiruneermalai when the driver noticed a lorry with a flat tyre in the middle of the road and swerved his vehicle to the left, and hit the side of a stationary vehicle. The stationary lorry was carrying a load of iron roads to be used in construction, and was on its way to Tirunelveli from Gummidipoondi. The rods broke through the windshield of the tanker lorry and impaled the driver. Police said the cleaner escaped. Traffic police soon alerted fire personnel after they noticed that fuel loaded in the tanker was leaking.Fire tenders from Ambattur and Poonamallee sprayed water on the leaked fuel. Police said IOC officials were alerted and the fuel in the tanker lorry was manually pumped out and loaded into another vehicle. The driver and cleaner of the other lorry that had a flat tyre also escaped, police said.
