New Delhi: The central government is all set to file a review petition against a Supreme Court order which bans convicted legislators from contesting elections. CNN-IBN has learnt that the Attorney General has suggested that the government to file a review petition in the case.

The AG has said since the matter relates to how the constitution is interpreted, it should be decided by a bench of five judges. The government has reportedly accepted his view and is likely to file a review petition next week.

The decision to take measures on the Supreme Court's judgement on the disqualification of MPs, had been taken in the all-party meet on Thursday. "Parties want the government to make a statement on it," Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kamal Nath had said after the meeting.

Concerns were expressed by parties that the supremacy of Parliament must be maintained and if required amendments must be brought in the constitution, Nath had said.

The Supreme Court had in a judgement said that MPs convicted by a court will stand to be disqualified from their posts and will not be able to contest elections. It, however, said that it would not apply to current MPs who have appealed against any convictions.
