To ensure the safety of voters during the Lok Sabha Election and prevent the impact of extreme weather conditions and heatwaves, the Centre has created a task force. This task force will review the preparedness five days before each polling phase to identify any concerning developments and take mitigatory measures if necessary.
The concerned task force will comprise officials from the Election Commission of India, the India Meteorological Department, the National Disaster Management Authority and the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.
What Will The Commission Do?
The Commission will direct MoHFW to issue necessary instructions to health authorities in states to prepare for and extend assistance in case of heatwave conditions affecting election operations.
The Commission will also hold a separate review with State CEOs to ensure adequate arrangements at polling stations including shamiyana, drinking water, fans, and other assured minimum facilities.
The panel will also be responsible carrying out IEC (Information, Education and Communication) activities amongst the public for precautionary measures (Do’s & Don’ts) to mitigate the heat wave impact in polling station areas.
Earlier this month, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya directed states and Union territories to chalk out a plan to mitigate heat wave impact, especially for mass gatherings amid the Lok Sabha elections.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted that the maximum temperature in the country will be above normal for this year. Since the beginning of April, temperatures of 40 to 42 degrees Celsius have been recorded in many parts of the country.
An advisory on heat wave was issued to all the states by the Ministry of Health on February 29, along with which the action plan prepared by the National Centre for Disease Control for the states and Do’s and Don’ts for the general public were shared.
