BANGALORE: Three hundred teams of Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) are ready to carry out inspection in order to assess the present status of available facilities of teaching and practical training in Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha colleges across the country.At present, there are 254 Ayurveda, 41 Unani and nine Siddha medical colleges offering undergraduate and post-graduate degree courses, recognised by CCIM and affiliated to 51 different universities in the country. In Karnataka, there are 58 Ayurveda colleges, which is the highest number after Maharashtra.During the 2010-11 inspection, the CCIM did not approve 40 colleges of the total 58 Ayurveda colleges in the state due to shortage of teaching faculty, inadequate infrastructure and not complying to the prescribed minimum standard of education. Speaking to Express, Vaidya Raghunandan Sharma, President the Central Council of Indian Medicine, said that this inspection will be carried out for the year academic year 2011-12 and those colleges which were not recognised last year would again be inspected. “If these colleges are complying to the prescribed standards by CCIM, permission for the admission for this years would be granted to them,” he added. Constituted by the Government of India, the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) is a statutory body which aims to prescribe minimum standards of education in Indian Systems of Medicine comprising of Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha. The council advises Central Government in the matters relating to recognition of medical qualification in these systems of medicine and maintain a central register of Indian medicine. It also prescribes standards of professional conduct, etiquette and code of ethics to be observed by the practitioners.
